Planning of international workshop in silicon carbide to advance technologies from research and innovation
Silicon carbide has reached wafer scale manufacturing. The PVT manufacturing is available to any player that wants to enter or expand growth of silicon carbide. The PVT equipment, source material, seed, hot-zone, the full process can simply be bought as whole concept or individual steps. One, few or even hundreds of furnaces for basic research or industrial production.
The SiC material has made the journey from early research in 1990s when funding programmes for SiC made it a global development. Annual SiC conferences (ICSCRM/ECSCRM) made the global community to come together. Today SiC is a commercial market. It has made the generation shift of advanced materials to market 30 year journey from research to (real) market.
The SiC wafer cost is continuously going down. The increasing number of manufacturing companies will enhance the competition. In order to be attractive, those players will find ways to reduce costs. Post growth like the laser cutting will make it possible to have even more wafers per manufacturing cycle. The wafer cost reduction will continue.
The lower wafer cost is a motivation for emerging technologies based on alternative approaches for technology advancement, including applications other than power conversion. There is a realistic cost motivation of the new technology thanks to lower wafer cost.
The future includes new business models and digitalization such as tokenization of semiconductors and digital twin of supply chain. This will be necessary to make the next 30 years in manufacturing and technologies for the society.
The workshop consists of three parts. One is open workshop about new business models and digitalization. The second will have dedicated presentations by researchers and industries who are active with relevant R&D for technology advancement. This is an opportunity for researchers and industries to disseminate their relevant research and development as well as build network with each other for collaborations, partnerships and alliances for future technology steps. At the end of the workshop there is the third part that is an open discussion.
Preliminary IW-SiC date is March 26-27, 2024. Meanwhile, for those interested in being part of idea creation, there is pre-workshop meeting Jan 11, 2024.
